The girl in the picture above is a Chinese-American who was looking for some help and a good laugh at the local Mingle. The photo was taken during an online meetup for Mingle, a Chinese-based dating site. The girl in the photo was a pretty Chinese-American girl in her late teens or early twenties. She was wearing a cute shirt, with a cute pair of glasses. I would imagine this was her first time in Hong Kong. A big surprise came in the form of this beautiful girl in her 20s who took the initiative to talk to me, and she had the most cute smile and the most sweet-natured smile. She spoke in English, and gave me a lot of information about her life and her job. When I asked her a bunch of questions, she told me that she had to get a degree in English literature in Beijing University. After this I left Hong Kong and went to Beijing, and it was not only the Chinese who were happy about this. One girl asked me what I thought about her and my attitude toward her, and she replied: "What did you say? You like her? You like her like a sister?" It was like a warm hug.
When I got back from my honeymoon in Hong Kong, I met her at a friend's place. I wanted to introduce myself to her as a real guy. I was nervous because she was the kind of girl you don't meet in person, and I just didn't know what to do. When I tried to introduce myself, she said: "Don't go in with just your head. You need to get your heart in order." Then she asked if I was interested. I said yes. But then I asked her, "Are you a Chinese girl? How long have you been living in China?" She asked, "No, I'm a Canadian." Then she gave me a look like she was angry, and said, "You don't speak Chinese. I want to introduce you to Chinese girls, to know how to meet Chinese girls. You have to have some knowledge of Chinese girls' language. What are you going to do? You need to know some things." At that moment I thought I was going to die. But I was determined. I said, "Look, I really need to find some Chinese girls. This is so important." She started crying and said, "Oh my god, I don't know how to do this." So I was like, "Well, go to the internet and ask girls there to do some research on you." And I wrote down their names, and she wrote down mine. Then I went there and asked for their email address. And they all sent me the same thing. They sent me a bunch of email, some of which I actually read. A lot of them were not bad in some way, but one of them said that she didn't like me. So I was like, "OK, I guess that's okay."
So, that was the first time that I ever heard that someone had told me something like that and then never read it again. I've never been one of those people. But I think I've always felt this way. I mean, I think that a lot of people are like, "Yeah, you can be me. You're beautiful and you're pretty." And I just think, "No. I'm different." I'm different. I don't have the same qualities that they have. I've had this weird sense of insecurity about my own personality since I was a little kid, like my sense of humor is weird and goofy, and that's what I always thought my own sense of humor was. I feel like, for some reason, it's a little bit more "you're weird" or "you're different" for me. So it was weird for me growing up. It just kind of made me not really think about myself.
I was always the weird guy. Even in middle school, I never felt like I fit in. Even when I was just hanging out with my friends and having fun, people would always make comments about me, like "you should wear glasses like the rest of the group." And I just thought, "well, at least I'm not like all of them." So it was weird and I don't know how I didn't realize this was a problem. This is how I always felt about my body.
